Full Description

{1} Middle Iron Age remains were concentrated within Trenches 97 and 98, where the evaluation targeted rectilinear and square enclosure systems previously identified by geophysical survey. The archaeological remains comprised enclosure ditches, gullies and pits forming organised settlement plots. The arrangement of the features suggests a settled agricultural community occupying land close to the Harrowden Brook floodplain during the second half of the 1st millennium BC. Occupation debris recovered from ditch and pit fills indicates that at least some enclosure interiors were inhabited and used for domestic activity. Isolated Iron Age features were also identified elsewhere within the event area, including ditch 4741 in Trench 102. The enclosure systems are interpreted as components of a broader rural settlement landscape, probably occupied by one or more family groups. Dating evidence was provided by associated Middle Iron Age pottery and a loomweight fragment. Charred plant remains indicate the disposal of domestic waste within settlement features.
