Full Description

{1} Deserted settlement of Hyde (SP 749513). Undocumented until 1200 (though may be one of the two manors refered to in Domesday under Roade). By 1768 only one farm remained. Several rectangular closes east of the farm are recorded on air photographs of 1947, though the area is now built upon. On the opposite side of the valley a few indeterminate earthworks and part of a hollow-way have survived. A pond in the valley bottom appears to be modern.

{2} First recorded in 1200

{3} In Domesday one of the entries under Roade is a manor of 1 hide; it is possible this entry refers to this settlement but this would mean that Roade itself was only a tiny manor with a population of 2

{5} It was a single farm by 1768

{6} The site is first mentioned in the 12th century as belonging to St James Abbey. The open field system has been recorded as now being almost all ploughed. There is a partial 1768 open field map along with the draft enclosure map of the 19th century which gives most of the furlong names.
