Monument record 471/1/1 - Site of a post-medieval/modern windmill

Mound, shown as a prehistoric barrow on Ordnance Survey first edition 1" map but possibly a windmill mound.

{1} Mound marked as "tumulus".

{2} Mound (SP 55107203) NW of the village, on a low ridge of clay at 115m above OD. A roughly circular mound, 1m high and 17m in diameter, with no trace of a ditch, overlies ridge-and-furrow. On the 1st ed OS 1" map of 1834 it is marked as 'tumulus', but it is perhaps a windmill mound.

{3} Recollections of the mill.
Still occupied by the remains of the windmill in the 1950s. 'The mill was a simple tower of red brick construction standing centrally on the mound, its entrance facing the gate to the enclosure, with the rotting timber remains of the sail yards and cap house leaning against, and scattered around, the base of the tower.' The mill was either demolished or, more likely, finally collapsed probably in the 1960s. Stylisitically, probably of mid 19th century type, possibly replacing an earlier post-medieval mill.
