Monument record 600/1/2 - St Mary's Churchyard

{1} Churchyard survey undertaken in June 1992; covered all existing earthworks and gravestones.

{2} The previous extent of the churchyard is shown to have been smaller by various earthwork remains. A low bank defines its original southern limit while the former northern edge is denoted by a shallow holloe. The major ditch at the east end of the churchyard can be traced from a rounded terminal for at least 26m running north. It is up to 1m deep and 4m across at its base. A low scarp on its edge continues along the north side of the churchyard as a hollow up to 0.20m deep. The southern edge of the former churchyard platform is marked by a low bank, approx. 0.50m high.

{3} Present Boundary shown but may have altered over time

{5} A complete record of the memorials in the churchyard/ It contained 76 individual memorials including two main family groups. Of the total number of stones 30 are illegible but the remainder commemorate 67 persons, buried since the 18th century.
