Description
In December 1992, the Cambridge office of The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England carried out an earthwork survey of The Orchard at Canons Ashby House, Canons Ashby, Northamptonshire. The survey was undertaken in advance of the re-planting of the area and followed a request by the National Trust. St Mary's Churchyard and the grounds of Church Cottage, which lie to the south of The Orchard, were also surveyed. The survey aimed to record traces of earthworks which were inaccessible when previous RCHME work was undertaken (RCHME 1981). Ordnance Survey control was established using a Wild TC1610 theodolite with integral EDM, and the details of the earthworks were recorded at 1:1000 scale by conventional graphical methods, and subsequently related to the earlier plan. Various earthworks related to the Priory and DMV of Canons Ashby, were investigated more briefly, and the earlier RCHME survey at 1:2500 was enhanced. A report and plans were produced to RCHME Level 3.
