Full Description

{1} Features seen in 1977 during drainage works. A ditch 12m wide and 3.5m deep cut an earlier Roman ditch (ref 726/4/8). Possibly part of C4th defences but probably linked with the refortification by Edward the Elder in 917. There are also the herringbone foundations of a wall in front of an earlier Roman one.
