Full Description

{1}EWKS; MED MANOR HOUSE SITE; S. OF CHURCH; GROUP OF LARGE STONE-PITS CUT INTO LOW BANKS; DUG INTO SITE OF MANOR HOUSE FORFOUNDATION STONES? (1); MED MANOR HOUSE TAKEN DOWN LATE C18TH (2); FNAME: THE SPINNEY (3); NCCAP: SP6354/37-38 (+);

(1) Manor house site (SP 633542). The Tithe Map of 1846 shows The
Spinney to have been a large paddock immediately S of the church.
Earthworks here suggest a building robbed for stone work. In the
19th century the paddock was a small deer park belonging to
Litchborough House.

(2) One manor house stood in the enclosure known as the Spinney, and
was taken down 50 years ago. Another family had an estate here
in the 15thC. Their house has been considerably enlarged.
(Presumably this is the house marked on the map)

(4) The second building described by authy 2 is that published. Built of
stone in three phases it is not architecturally outstanding.
The site of the other manor was not ascertained but it was almost
certainly in the area of Litchborough House (SP63075423), the
principal residence in the village.

(5) (SP 63475438 Manor House (LB)
