Full Description

{1} Norton Hall was a largely C19th house, destroyed in 1952 presumably on the site of the medieval manor house. The manor was sold in 1800 to Thomas Botfield who gave it to his son, Beriah. The latter is said to have improved and modernised the house by 1808. He died in 1813 and extensive alterations were carried out by his son, another Beriah, who died in 1864. The house, as it survived into this century, was in the Gothic style and was described by J.A. Gotch as a good example of the architecture of the second quarter of the 19th century. The house is said to have incorporated the remains of one built of repaired by Sir Richard Knightley who held the manor in the late 16th century.

{2} Norton Hall - Although the visible work is 19th cent. [see AO:60:381:7] the house has a long history and was presumed by Baker(a)to incorporate the remains of the one built or repaired by Sir Richard Knightley (c.1588).

{5} Demolished before 1957.

{6} Norton Hall was demolished in 1952 but survivng documents and illustrations allow a reconstruction of its development. A late medieval hall and cross-wings formed the core of a house which was enlarged in the 16th century when it became a secondary house of the Knightleys of Fawsley. Apart from some additions in the late 17th century the house was little altered until it was bought by the Botfield family in 1801. It was then extensively rebuilt in a Tudor Gothic style. A 19th century plan of the house, with room names, shows how the enlargement of the house reflected the demand that had developed for extensive specialised service rooms.

{7} Blown up 1952 by army.
