Monument record 1071/1/1 - Pipewell Abbey Church

{1} Excavation of 1909 at Pipewell Abbey. Excavations revealed only part of the church plan, that of the crossing point of the choir or nave, and part of the chancel.

{2}{3} Popular reports on the start and subsequent progress of the excavations.

{4} Finds of decorated stonework, decorated tiles and animal bone. Drawings made, also rubbings and descriptions of tiles (of 1883). Some of the tiles were originally in G.Baker's collection. They were bought by Dryden in the 1840s. In 1908 two days were spent excavating south of the brook on a rectangular platform. Three trenches were excavated and several rough masonry blocks were recovered. Markham, 1909.
