Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking in November 1989. G.Cadman in conjunction with Education Officer. The field was occupied by tenements as late as the C18th. Medieval sherds suggest an early date for occupation, and there was also early Saxon pottery present.

{2} The land to the east of the former East Street is now ploughed, and a fieldwalking survey has recovered a dense distribution of pot sherds, which show that at least the southern part of Little Ecton was occupied during the medieval period, and confirms settlement continued at the northern end, as the maps demonstrate, right up until the C18th. Fig 1 shows finds distributions.
The fieldwalking east of East Street also produced several sherds of early middle Saxon pottery which may indicate occupation of that date.
