Monument record 1160/200/8 - Medieval activity, Gold Street

A watching brief undertaken in 1987 identified a thick deposit of sandy soil containing pottery from the 10th and 14th centuries. This may have sealed earlier archaeological features.

{1}Watching brief undertaken during the construction of a small shopping centre. In a trench to the rear of 49 Gold Street, a post medieval build-up of dark soil was 0.6m thick, which was overlying a well from which 2 sherds C16/17th pottery & glass slag recovered. Below was a layer of brown sandy soil ac0.8m thick. Pottery of C10-14th date from layer thus possibly sealing late Saxon deposits.
