Full Description

{3}Watching brief at Brook's Motors revealed Late Saxon and Medieval rubbish pits.,

{2}A watching brief carried out in 1988 during groundworks for an extension to Tony Brooks Motors. A single trench, 1m wide and 10m E-W x 6m N-S and excavated to a depth of 1.20m. An ironstone subsoil was revealed at a depth of 0.8m (2m below car park level to the north) and a yellow clay at 1.20m. Beneath a dark loam cutting into the ironstone were four pits consisting of pottery dating from the 10th to 14th centuries. Interpreted as being the spread of settlement into the area at an early stage in the late Saxon period.,

{1}Four pits observed cut into ironstone natural; three pits contained pottery dating from possible C10th through to C13/14th; relationship with overlying dark loam was not determined & possible that other pits were concealed within this layer;
