Monument record 1160/202/1 - Possible late Saxon/early medieval timber building

A possible beam slot was found during trial trench evaluation on Commercial Street in 1985. probably of late Saxon or early medieval date

{1} At the north end of the trench the gravel was overlain by a sandy clay, probably alluvial in character, up to 1m thick. This was cut by a shallow trench, possibly the foundation trench for a timber building, which in turn was overlain by a redeposited alluvial clay and a layer of metalling. This feature and the overlying deposits are probably of late Saxon or early medieval date.

{7}At the north end of the trench, alluvium up to 1m thick. This was cut by a shallow trench, possibly the foundation trench for a timber building. Probably of Late Saxon or early Medieval in date.,
