Type and Period (2)

Full Description

{1} It has been recorded that "human remains are everywhere to be met with just below the surface" in the field about 400m north of the church.

{2} The discovery of a large number of skeletons at Passenham on the same Roman road, but on the southern boundary of the county, must be passed over, as the account [ie. Whellan] gives only a slight presumption that they were of the Saxon period.

{3} Human remains are everywhere to be met with just below the surface of the field. Fieldname: Windmill Field. Glass, pottery and flint "of great antiquity" is also to be found.

{4} Doubtful Anglo-Saxon burials.

{5} It may be significant that no ancient finds were recovered from the same gravel terrace nearby, where the discovery of human burials, if not other finds, has been reported previously (Mon 1181/1/1, Ref Whellan 1874, p.573). The subsequent excavation of trial trenches in the area also failed to locate early remains. It is possible therefore that the published reference is erroneous, especially since the work that contains it is known to be incorrect about other archaeological details which it includes.
