Full Description

{1} Late Saxon and medieval walls, ditches, post-holes and make-up layers were located on both the valley bottom and the top of the valley side. Good groups of late Saxon, medieval and late medieval pottery were obtained from the make-up layers.

{2} Concentration of medieval pot sherds found during fieldwalking (predominantly 12th century). Trenches revealed foundations of a wall, four ditches and a number of irregular hollows - presumably linked to Thorpe Street frontage. Features sealed by ridge and furrow. Along the frontage two possible late medieval structures revealed during excavation. One was a partly robbed stone wall and metalled surface and the other was suggested by presense of a number of postholes. Elsewhere marked absense of pottery - suggests decline in number of households during late medieval period.
