Summary

Archaeological excavation during the construction of a new farm track in 1988 identified a medieval ditch, which appears to have been perpetuated as a boundary into the post-medieval and modern periods by various means. A heavily rutted post-medieval farm track may have destroyed an area of medieval settlement along Shelton Road

Full Description

{4} The construction of a new access road to a farm off the west side of Shelton Road in 1988 provided the opportunity of excavation within the area of indistinct earthworks. The south end of the trench contained a boundary ditch with pottery of the 13th-14th centuries. The ditch was later replaced by two walls, one superimposed on the other. Trial excavation further to the west indicated both the continuation of the ditch and at least one of the walls for a distance of 80m. The main excavation also revealed a heavily post-medieval trackway extending west from the modern road, which apeared to have destroyed medieval settlement remains. The sharp decline of pottery in the later 14th century indicates the decline of the settlement.
