Full Description
{1} A building apparently aligned in a N-S direction consisting of:
a brown snady clay loam layer which appeared to be the natural layer but could have been part of the floor of the building
two wall foundations of compacted layers of yellowish mortar together with small amounts of flint and limestone, on a NW-SE alignment. One of the walls was cut by a small feature which may have been a posthole
Two further possible wall foundations were seen but not excavated
A multiple hearth was excavated within the building. It consisted of two small circular hearths and one large hearth immediately to the south. The three hearths were centred around a slightly raised platform consisting of mortar and burnt limestone. Sherds of early medieval pottery were found in the hearths. It is possible that one of the small hearths and the lager one were contemporary with the other smaller one postdating them. The lack of slag and other waste material seems to suggest that the hearths were domestic rather than industrial.
