Monument record 1347/0/11 - Late Saxon and medieval settlement, north of East Street

Archaeological excavation prior to development identified late Saxon post-built buildings and medieval stone-founded buildings attesting to occupation during these periods. During the post-medieval period, the site appears to have been used for quarrying and thereafter as an orchard or garden.

{1} Archaeological recording action prior to development comprised the excavation of three trial trenches. The earliest significant activity dated to the late Saxon period and comprised a possible timber post-built structure and pits or boundaries. The area of excavation was not of a large enough area to determine the plan or extent of the features.
Settlement continued into the medieval period with the construction of stone-founded buildings. Within one building were multiple hearths, probably of domestic rather than industrial use. During the post-medieval period, the site appears to have been used for quarrying and thereafter as an orchard or garden.
