Monument record 1613/2/3 - Romano-British Pottery Kilns & Associated Settlement Remains
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Coney-gree, Rainbows Rood and Ten Yards fields. A concentration of Roman pottery, fire-bars and baked clay kiln lining material found at a probable settlement site. Occupation debris (building stone scatter, wall plaster, roof tiles, probably a few tesserae) as distinct from industrial debris predominates at the latter area. A pit excavated in 1958 contained kiln debris and 1st century pottery as did four further gullies or pits. Roman finds include over thirty coins (1st to 4th century) one of which was a gold aureus of Augustus; bronze brooches, pins and bracelet; a piece of lead and a bead. Other finds are two flint arrowheads (barbed and tanged and leaf-shaped), worked flints, and an Anglo-Saxon disc brooch. Site of an Iron Age settlement indicated by cropmarks of a complex series of enclosures and ditches. Surface finds from the area include Iron Age pottery, some of Hunsbury type, associated with numerous pits. A celtic coin of Cunobelin, Mack type 246 was found at this site. Interpreted as a possible Roman villa. site.
