Full Description
{1} Excavation was conducted in November/December 1972 on the south end of the former Fox's Farm site, as near the medieval street frontage on Church Street as possible. Part of the stone foundations of the 17th-century farmhouse were recovered, with its adjacent stone and brick outbuildings including two wells. Most of the remaining area (20 x10m was opened) had been used for quarrying, initially in the late 13th-14th centuries and again in the 17th century, on that occasion presumably for stone for the most recent farmhouse. There was no evidence for medieval structures, but the quarry fills provide a pottery sequence from early Saxon onwards, culminating in a 17th cenutyr group including Midland Yellow and Purple wares and some stoneware.
{2} Post-Medieval farmhouse(SP 74657113),at the site of Fox's Farm. The foundations of the 17th century farmhouse and outbuildings were recovered, and 2 wells.Much of the excavated area had been quarried, apparently between the 14th and 17th centuries, and the fill contained pottery from early Saxon times.
