Monument record 1653/0/2 - Probable Medieval Cess Pit, Club Lane

Summary
An oval pit was discovered during landscaping works in 1971. Pottery from the pit, including 50 sherds of Stamford Ware, dated to the mid 12th century. A fragment of Neolithic polished axe was also found in the pit fill.

Full Description
{1} Excavation in 1971, of a medieval flat-bottomed, oval pit in the garden of 1 Club Lane. A large area of the garden was stripped but no other features were exposed. SP96907681. Pottery report prepared. A Neolithic polished stone axe, Group VI was found in the pit fill. Possibly thin-sectioned. A tile also found within the pit may be Roman.
{2} Probable cess pit. C12th pottery included 50+ sherds of Stamford ware.
