Find Spot record 2485/0/1 - Site of possible medieval settlement

A thick scatter of unstratified medieval pottery and arrowheads found near Lower Benefield indicates a possible settlement.

{1} J.M Steane and Kettering Grammar School Local History & Archaeological Society picked up a thick scatter of medieval sherds in the corner of the field at SP966866. The scatter included sherds of green-glazed Lyveden type jugs with white stripes and hatched pads, two cooking pot rims, one broad handle with stab marks; also 23 sherds of St Neots type ware with large irregular white shell fill and 42 sherds of corky fabric oxidised wares, Lyveden type. Also two iron arrowheads, one socketed with triangular flat blade, one with single barb and socketed, probably C13th. Possibly represents an isolated medieval farmstead well to the east of the nucleated settlement of Upper Benefield.

{2} Settlement, as represented by medieval pottery including St Neots and Lyveden wares, has been found, as well as two iron arrowheads.
