Summary

Earthworks of village shrinkage identified at Barton Seagrave. Medieval pottery was also recovered from this area during road construction.

Full Description

{2} A wide scatter of medieval pot sherds were found during road widening between SP888773 & SP891773. The pottery included glazed Stamford ware, reduced sandy fabric, C13th shelly wares and Lyveden type decorated fragments and a 'rope twist' handle

{3} During road works a considerable amount of medieval pottery was noted, including Stamford and Lyveden wares of 11th to 13th century date.

{4} During road widening in the mid 1960s, a considerable amount of medieval pottery and masonry was uncovered just to the north of this area.

{5} "Barton Seagrave, SP 890774. Platforms have been cut into by road work. Masonry was found at a depth of 5ft by the road edge, but little damage was done".

{6} The indicated site falls within an area of shrinkage extending, on the south side of the road, from the fortified manor site eastwards for 500 m.
