Full Description

{2} Single Domesday manor divided in the 13th century. One part retaining the 12th century name of its owners, the Hanreds, the other granted to the Seagrave family. Nicholas de Seagrave gained a licence to crenellate his manor. The Handred manor was acquired by the Humphrey family after 1446 and the two manors were re-united when they acquired the Seagrave manor sometime before 1557.
The village saw some decline in population in the later Middle Ages and extensive decline in the 16th or early 17th centuries, possibly associated with enclosure and conversion to pasture in 1633.

{3} Barton Seagrave Castle was built in the early 14th century by Nicholas Segrave the younger and is apparently last mentioned in 1433 after which it probably became a ruin.
