Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking recovered early and middle Saxon pot sherds including some with stamp decoration.

{2} Report on pot sherds; This group of thirty seven sherds can all be dated to the Early and middle saxon periods and a date range of c.530-550 to c.700AD is suggested.

{3?} Sparse scatter of Saxon sherds over many acres on both sides of Marsdale Slade. The finds include not only hard sandy/gritty black, greyish and brownish sherds, all with grey/black cores, and most with high mica content, but also sherds with stamp and groove decoration. (Over area centred on SP895654.)

{4} No features associated with the early middle Saxon period were found during geophysical survey and subsequent trial trenching, although a single sherd of early middle Saxon pottery was retrieved during the excavation of Trench 7, which was located close to the previous find spot.

{5} Saxon settlement (?) (SP 893654), on Boulder Clay at 45m above OD. Early Saxon sherds have been found over an area of nearly 2 hectares. More pottery of the same type has been found to the S. in Great
Doddington parish.
