Full Description
{1} Earthwork remains of formal gardens extending to the south and east of the site of Harrington Manor House. The garden are thought to have been established during the 16th or 17th century and comprise a rectangular sunken garden bounded by terraces. A series of terraces are also present to the east of the house. The gardens cover 3.5ha, possible central pond; traces of paths; terraces rising up hillside.
{4} Possible survey by Steane for Kettering Grammar School.
{6} Site inspection on garden earthworks to assess condition; site generally in good condition with limited erosion caused by vulnerable location of particular scarps; see report in Supplementary file for details.
{8} "….for a descent of garden walks there is nothing so remarkable with us as is that of the walks in the garden on the northern front of the Right Honorable The Earl of Dysert's House at Harrington…."
{9} Present Earl of Dysart made garden.
{15} The magnificent gardens at Harrington probably date from about 1680. They were arranged in broad terraces laid out across sloping ground and the traces of poand, walkways and even flower beds still survive, as does the site of the original house at the lower end. Yet while it certainly existed in 1712 its subsequent history is quite unknown. Plates 10-12.
{17} Photo dated 06.04.1993.
{19} The formal gardens were laid out by Sir Lionel and Lady Elizabeth Tollemache some time between 1675 and 1719 and survive as well defined earthworks covering an area of 220 metres by 230 metres. Identifiable features include a series of terraces and pond complex.
