Type and Period (1)

Full Description

{1} A roughly rectangular area bounded on the south east by the existing road, on the north east by an old hollow way and to the north west by a low, broad flat-topped bank or terraced walk. The earthworks form the formal gardens of the 1582 mansion house.

{6} The gardens at Alderton were laid out by William Gorges in 1582 when a large mansion was built there. The house seems to have been demolished before 1726, though when is not certain. Now only the terraces, ponds and a huge motte-like prospect mound remain, surrounded by medieval plough ridges and the abandoned lanes, paddocks and house sites of what was once a much larger village of Alderton.
