Full Description

{4} Excavation, undertaken in 1965-7 by Dennis Jackson at SP763576. Seven Roman pottery kilns of probably the 1st c AD came to light when work for a new housing development was carried out at Martin's Lane, Hardingstone (SP 763576) in 1965. Five kilns were found fairly close together dug into sand during the making of a road. The other two dug into clay were found during building operations. The kiln structures appear to have been little more than holes in the ground. When dug into sand the sides were lined with flat stones standing on edge. Sides of clay were allowed to harden during firing. The amount of pottery found was not large and there were very few obvious wasters.

{2} OS give SP76165758. The site was indicated by the headmaster of Hardingstone Junior School.

{4} At SP76165763 a further excavation was undertaken in 1967 at 47 St Martins Lane. Three ditches were found, as well as a shallow clay-lined depression containing bone, pot sherds and kiln debris. This site was within the same area as that excavation by Dennis Jackson and Frost in 1965. This was excavated by Mr R.Turland and appears to be part of the same complex.

{5} Site indicated on the ground, by the headmaster, Hardingstone Junior School, at SP 7616 5758. The area is under modern development and much isolated. Roman pottery has been found in the gardens.
