Full Description

{1} Excavation at Brigstock Manor was undertaken in 1983. A large ill defined pit was identified. It measured at least 6m across with sloping sides cut down into the clay subsoil to a depth of at least 0.6m. Numerous pottery sherds dating from the mid-late 1st century were recovered from its fill. At a distance of c. 4m to the north a separate shallow pit at least 2m across its fill contained no dating evidence.
A single post hole c.0.4m in diameter was cut into the subsoil in the southern corner of the site.
A layer seen to the north west of the post hole contained sherds of late 1st- early 2nd century date and a fragment of a brooch of probable 1st century date.

A number of shallow parallel lines scored into the natural subsoil in the south east corner of the site could be the result of ploughing. A layer of brown, gritty loam which contained late Roman and Early-Middle Saxon pottery sherds may be the remains of a cultivation layer which suggests that the site was ploughed at that time.
