Monument record 836/0/1 - Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement, A45

Circular enclosure ditch excavated in 1966, found to contain Bronze Age and Iron Age material. It measured 180 feet in diameter with a ditch 6 feet wide and 9 feet deep. Crucible fragments and domestic hearths were identified.

{1} Excavation in 1966, 12m south of the villa. Finds with G. Brown

{3} At Harpole, SP 684588 a prehistoric site was found 40' S of the Roman villa (SP 65 NE 2), on the crest of the hill, (SP68385988). A circular ditch 180 feet in diameter was 6 feet wide and 9 feet deep. The middle silting of the ditch contained a Bronze age sherd, scoria and crucible fragments; above this there were Belgic butt beaker sherds. Small domestic hearths overlay the whole area

{4} The indicated site is under plough and no surface remains were seen. The finds made during the rescue excavation of 1966 are in the possession of Mrs G Brown who has yet to publish a report.
