Full Description

{2} Trial excavation west of Watling St probably located just outside town defences; revealed more rubbish pits containing C1st & C2nd material; finds included large Nene Valley type beaker decorated with 3 horizontal bands of barbotine scrollwork; also tall folded beaker & large painted pot ornamented with concentric circles of latticework; also part of glass bowl & fragments of black samian pot with applied relief of chariot of Apollo & letters "PAT[ERNAS]; also small bowl of imitation samian form 29 decorated with white slip spots; all finds were C2nd date; [allocated ngr of c.SP612648 does not lie west of Watling St]

{4}Excavation carried out between 1954-56 in field named Great Shawney; directed by Frost on behalf of NNHS&FC; rubbish pits revealed; plan; sketch section; plans of trenches with related notes; details of finds; all finds either in Northampton Museum or with Chubb. 26th May 1956 [presumed to be part of NNHS&FC excavation] a hoard of 40 coins was found in a C2nd pot buried beneath pebble floor
