Description

Watling Street makes a westward loop at this point; which is 12 miles N of Lactodorum and 12 miles S of Tripontium. The Roman name of the posting station is known to have been Bannaventa but its exact position is uncertain. Possibly the original Watling Street went straight along the crest. According to the OS card a Roman building and pottery have been found in the E side of this field (OS70), and trenches for field drains revealed dark occupation soil. C.12 sherds of Roman pottery picked off field in Jan 1970. When the full limits of the Roman station are known the scheduled areas may have to be extended {AM7} Area to be scheduled extended across the E side of Watling St. as a result of bulldozing and excavation in 1970, after A/P's available {AM7}
