Building record 7203/16/1 - Boot and shoe factory, 83 High Street South

Please read our .

Summary

An early integrated house and shoe factory, built in 1874, stands gable-on to the street on the north side of High Street South. It consists of three storeys and a basement, at least at the south end and is built on a narrow plan with walls of orange brick except on the south front where buff brick is employed. The return elevations are plain with segmental window heads and cogged eaves. To the east, facing the alley, there is a long blind area at the south end, from which a broad multi-flue stack rises. It appears that the ground and first floors were in domestic (rather than) use from the outset, while the basement and second floor, which have taking-in doorways on the south front, were in industrial use. This building is particularly important as an illustration of the close and persistent relationship between domestic and manufacturing space in the boot and shoe industry.
