Summary

Saxon features were observed during the costruction of houses o the south side of Woodnewton Road in 1988. The nature of the activity could not be determined, but may have been quarrying.

Full Description

{1} Features seen during building development works in 1988. Sketch plan showing 2 medieval pits and the extent of the late Saxon features seen in the trenches. Also indicates the findspots of the pot sherds and slag collected.

{2} Underlying almost the whole of the excavation area was a shallow stone pit from which over fifteen hundred sherds of ?9/10th century Stamford ware pottery was recovered. A few Middle Saxon pottery sherds were also found but no features relating to this period were located.

{3} A Late Saxon quarry which predated the stone manor was found.
