Find Spot record 3591/0/1 - Prehistoric/Roman settlement

Cropmarks of ditches and finds of Roman pottery indicate a possible Roman settlement. Flint flakes have also been found.

{1}Fieldwalking; Romano-British pot sherds and flint flakes.

{3} RB coarse wares and a few flint flakes were found at SP 885695 during early 1966 by field walking.

{4}57 sherds of Roman and 35 sherds of Iron Age pottery recovered in trial trenches; Iron Age fabric typical of contemporary local ceramic tradition; Roman pottery dated from the conquest to the early second century, varied fabrics but no samian ware.Other finds included a bronze Iron Age coin (12mm diameter) possibly of Andoco (10BC to AD 10), a chalk disc (possibly used as a bead) and six pieces of tufa.

{7} Site under corn, no surface disturbances noted. R Harper confirmed the site and retains the finds.

{8} Roman Settlement (SP 885695). Air photographs (Northants. SMR) show indistinct cropmarks covering 0.5 hectare, perhaps bounded on two sides by a ditch, close to the Roman material previously recorded.

{9} "Wellingborough. 'Ancient Well' (Thompson MSS) perhaps Roman".
