Summary

Pottery kiln excavated at Gypsy Lane in 1995. It was in production during the 15th century and produced a range of vessels and ridge tiles. There is documentary evidence that the kiln was in operation in 1483. The kiln was also used for lime burning between pottery firings.

Full Description

{1} Large quantity of stone. Late C14th and early C15th pottery [revsd 16?]. Roof tile, jugs, grey and pink wares, some green glazed. Site excavated August 1995 and more samples taken for fabric series. There is said to be another kiln, but uncertain where. Gloucester Fee court rolls.

{2} Earthwork of a mound approximately 1m high x c.10m diameter. Noted by J.Johnson 21/3/1980. Fieldwalking recovered a "large quantity" of late medieval pot sherds and glazed tiles. J. Johnson 21/3/1980. Finds included pot wasters.

{4} Excavation of late 15th century pottery kiln (subject to plough threat); kiln to be left in-situ and reburied to depth to prevent further damage.

{5} 15th century pottery kiln producing a typical range of 15th century pottery including vessels for brewing and dairying and crested ridge tiles. Documentary evidence shows the kilns to be in operation in 1483. An interesting feature was the use of the kilns for lime buring between pot firings throughout the life of the structures.
