Full Description

{1} Earthwork of an L-shaped bank and ditch 50 yds south of the A6. Water lies in south west corner. Two developed Stamford ware sherds picked up in cowscrape on rim of ditch. Possibly a fishpond.

{2} Plan

{3} A large L-shaped depression, 45m across and 1.5m deep, set into the hillside. This is perhaps an old pond.

{4} Archaeological study of the medieval manorial enclosure and fishponds at Barton Seagrave. Test pits excavated in the area of the earthwork recovered medieval pottery dating between 1100-1400. A rubble layer found at the eastern entrance of the fishpond was interpreted as a possible stone-built or stone-supported sluice. The test pits also revealed a clay base overlying an underground spring. This fishpond was supplied by its own spring water, but was also connected with the other fishponds to the west by a complex series of sluices, channels, dams and overflows.
