Monument record 4946/0/9 - Roman buildings, Duston Roman Town

Excavations by the NDC Archaeological Unit in 1974-6 to the south of the Weedon Road area recovered definite evidence of structures within the town. In this location a series of early gullies and itches were replaced by buildings.

{1} Stone structure 12m x 6m & dating to AD C3rd or C4th.

{2} A simple stone founded rectangular building 11.5m long by 6m wide in Phase 5 (late 3rd-late 4th century AD) of Trench E replaced an earlier post built structure dating to late 3rd century. This building, with its long axis orientated north west-south east lay perpendicular to the course of the main road and was set some 50m back from it. A small malting kiln or drying oven lay in its interior.

{3} A short stretch of wall and yard surfaces may be part of yard for building or neighbouring structure.
