Description

{1} Site 2 comprised three adjoining trenches (A, B & C) which identified a Roman road and roadside settlement. Trenches E and F lay to the north of the road. There was some evidence for Roman enclosures and in later phases two stone founded buildings, one with a malting kiln or corn-drying oven in the interior, and two inhumations. A watching brief undertaken in 1976 covered all the area to the east of the main excavation and the area had already been badly disturbed by the time recording was carried out. However, a coin hoard was recovered, the remains of three possible stone-founded buildings, inhumations and the continuation of the road. A ladder-enclosure was also investigated. {3} Topsoil removal in advance of rubbish dump extension has now uncovered evidence of settlement covering c260m north-south by 80m. An area 90m by 10m was excavated. [Watching brief area not mapped; lies to the east of the excavated trenches]
