Full Description

{1} Finds of 22 prehistoric worked flints during excavation; small blades suggest Mesolithic date; also 2 pot sherds of possible late Neolithic date; SP75656038. 10 very small fragments of Neolithic pot were found to the east on the Derngate frontage at SP75696039

{2} Worked flints & few fragments of badly weathered prehistoric pottery were found in deposits below medieval levels.

{3} Earliest layer was brown sand immediately above subsoil which in Northampton generally contains prehistoric & early-middle Saxon material; 9 prehistoric sherds & 16 worked flints recovered from layer; lack of Saxon material might indicate this particular layer of prehistoric period; only feature which might belong to this phase was possible posthole cut through layer but containing fill often associated with prehistoric or early-middle Saxon activity. Further finds included a single Roman potsherd & 2 worked flints.
