Full Description

{1} Much Roman material has been found over a wide area and ranging in date from the 1st to the 4th century. It includes … coins and building stone. It appears that there was an important building in the area occupied at least throughout the 2nd and 3rd centuries though no foundations or exact site have yet been identified.

{2} Present finds include large quantities of Roman pottery which although scattered does occur in concentrations together with tile (both plain, ridge and flue types having been found), much stone, and apparent building debris. Of the pottery, the Samian is mainly second century but includes some first century pieces. Imitation Samian also occurs. The coarse wares similarly reflect this wide range of dates, falling mostly within the late second/ third centuries. The few coins likewise are of mid-late 3rd century date. Identifiable examples are of Postumus, Gallienus, Constantine !, Constantine II and Valentinian I.
