Monument record 2301/0/75 - Possible Iron Age/Roman settlement

Please read our .

Summary

[Part of the wider Harper's Brook Complex] The site of a probable Iron Age or Roman enclosure, apparently destroyed during gravel quarrying in 1965. It had been photographed as a cropmark by St Joseph in 1953. Limited salvage excavation of the ditch recovered a single sherd of Late Iron Age pottery from the primary silts, suggesting that the site may have been broadly contemporary with the more fully investigated ditched enclosure to the north (SP 98 SE 15). Ordnance Survey field investigation also apparently recovered four Roman potsherds from the surface in the vicinity of the enclosure.
