Full Description

{1} 2 drainage trenches cut alongside A5; no definite structures identifiable but certain amount of Romano-British pottery present; trenches revealed at least 1m depth of modern dumping overlying old topsoil; trench appeared to cut into archaeological layers to north of Whilton Lodge entrance;

{2} M.Curteis of Northampton Museum reports that a local metal detectorist has recovered objects from A5 trenches including c.30 coins & a fibula brooch & a possible seal box lid.

{3} Analysis of an assemblage of 102 coins collected from metal detecting at the southern end of the settlement of which the 40 located here form a part, however, does indicate that Whilton has similar monetary profile to other small towns in this part of Roman Britain and thus probably did act as a significant focus for trade and taxation.
