Full Description

{1} Warehouse; Latimer & Crick's Corn Merchants; 4 storey brick building with slate roof; wooden structures over sack hoists; still in use.

{2} Latimer & Crick Corn Merchant's premises and engines.

{3} Latimer & Crick Corn Merchants at South Bridge.

{4} Latimer and Crick warehouse, built of orange brick (with evidence of rope scoring around the loading doors) forms a significant landmark on this approach to the town centre. Place north of the river the warehouse is an integral part of the water based industrial development that took place around South Bridge/Cotton End.

{5} The Latimer & Crick Warehouse is a typical late Victorian building that has seen many expansions through the major part of the 20th century. At the time of the survey all of the machinery had been removed and either sold on or scrapped. There is physical dating evidence available in the form of original roof trusses.
The grain store was built c1893 by the builder John Garrett. The warehouse was operating under the name of The Cash Corn Company in 1894. A new three storey extension and stables were added by 1913. Latimer & Crick took receipt of all buildings in 1958. Latimer & Crick have been associated with the corn warehouse up until the early part of 2004.
The positioning of the site may have been chosen with care, as it would have meant that seed and grain could have been transported from Duston Mill via canal or river straight to the outskirts of Northampton, but more importantly a short distance from the cattle market. If there were any phsical evidence for a mooring, jetty or landing quay at the warehouse it has long since been removed due to redevelopment. It should be noted that the hoist has insufficient span to reach over to the riverbank.
