Full Description
{1} Post medieval/modern mill building; burnt & demolished by 1965.
{2}{3}{4} An impressive three and four storey corn mill, with ashlar walls and stone slate roof, burnt down in 1968, although the wheel races and sluices for the two breast-shot waterwheels can still be seen. The granary building, which was at right angles to the mill at its north-west end, has been adapted for a dwelling, its north-east end being set back from its original position alongside the road.
{5} First documented in 1202. In 1762 there were three millers at Cotterstock. The mill was rebuilt in 1803. In 1932 the mill was refitted with modern provender milling and seed-cleaning equipment drivne by electricity although the two waterwheels were retained in use driving the two remaining pairs of millstones for rough work and gristing. The mill burnt down on the 30th January 1968, apparently due to an electrical fault. Later the remains of the mill were demolished and the storage buildings along the north-west side of the river were converted into dwellings.
{6} Includes photos of 1962 pre-fire and photos taken in February 1968 post-fire showing the extent of the damage to the mill.
