Full Description

{2} Trial trench excavation undertaken prior to development identified a ditch running east-west for approximately 1.5m, containing middle Saxon Ipswich Ware pottery. It was cut by a medieval pit.

A series of ditches may represent the boundaries of tenement backplots, with further perpendicular ditches separating adjoining land parcels. Some of these ditches were dated to the 11th century while some showed recuts, indicating renewal into the medieval period. A wall foundation seen in one of the ditches appears to indicate that a wall replaced the earlier boundary ditch at some point after the 12th century. A few Late Saxon and medieval pits were also seen.

A scatter of 12 postholes appear to form the corner and part of two walls of a post-built structure. Animal bone was found in the postholes but no datable finds. A second scatter of postholes to the south may be part of another structure although all were very shallow. The alignment of the possible buildings does not respect the late Saxon boundary ditches on the site, perhaps implying that they are later features.
