Full Description

{2} Bryant clearly indicates that in the early C19th Salcey Lawn was regarded as a parkland, although it may have been sub-divided into at least two compartments. Only the main structures around the house, named Great Lodge, are shown.
[SMR note 01/10/2008: it is worth noting that there appears to be a separate, small area of parkland to the south, east of Prentice Coppice, within which stands the named Little Lodge. The 1814 OS map annotates it as Hanslope Lodge. More recent OS mapping suggests that this was subsumed within the woodland of Salcey Forest from at least the late C19th.]

{3} In the C18th a large, irregular, enclosed clearing is shown within Salcey Forest, with scattered trees resembling wood-pasture.

{6} 320 acres with the lodges and houses. "isparked" for £2,100 in 1629-30 to Endymion Porter. Present proprietor: Fred William Wentworth, Esq.

{9} References to stocks of deer and their management at Salcey.

{11} A clear account of the management and structure [of Salcey Forest] is provided by the 1792 report (NRO: XYZ 1939). As well as the plains, there were four lawns or open spaces, consisting of the Great Lawn (124 acres), Little Lawn (23 acres), Hanslope Lawn (23 acres) and Hartwell Lawn (33 acres). Common cattle were at all times excluded from the lawns by a railed fence and only deer and cattle belonging to the ranger or keepers admitted.
The edges of Salcey Lawn are marked with slight ditches that are undoubtedly old, made for hedges and fences contemporary with the forest coppices.

{12} Distribution of trees suggests parkland occupied by 'Rangers Lodge'. The parkland appears to be enclosed by a fence or hedge, and divided into compartments (see also Bryants map of the 1820s).
