Monument record 1742/0/14 - Early Saxon Structure On Top of Neolithic Mound

{1} Poorly preserved Saxon structure found in close proximity to (50m away) Saxon sunken feature building of 421-597 AD date.

{2} A second, poorly preserved structure was found 50m away from the first early Saxon structure.

{3} Initially defined by a localised scatter of early Saxon pottery on the surface of the prehistoric long mound, in excavation it was only visible as a shallow and poorly defined oval to sub-rectangular depression 5.5m long x 3.3m wide and a maximum of 0.12m deep. There were two internal postholes, and a linear concentration of charcoal was perhaps the remnant of a single short plank which lay between them. The absence of any other structural remains leaves the building form uncertain, although the presence of the pottery scatter, a decorated bone spindle whorl, a ceramic spindle whorl and fragments of clay loomweight suggest that it had been a roofed structure.
