Description

{2} The western half of the settlement area was subject to extensive area excavation between 1985-89. This covered c.13,000sq.m. Excavation was carried out by Northamptonshire County Council as part of the Raunds Area Project, and at West Cotton was intended to allow the investigation of a minor hamlet to test if its origins were long after the creation of the main villages or whether it represents the last remnants of the early-middle Saxon settlement pattern. {3} Excavation began in March 1985 with the opening of a single elongated area 140m long x 30m wide along the line of the new road. Excavation was only completed towards the end of 1986, the trenches backfilled prior to commencement of road construction early in 1987.
