Summary

Documentary evidence for Fetter Lane has been found as early as the 13th century. Crackbelle / Crackbowle / Crack Bowl Lane is suggested as an alternative name for it in an 18th-century deed, but there is conflicting evidence. Crack Bowl Lane may have been located further to the east.

Full Description

{3} Ascribed to the 13th century by Cox. An orchard and garden in Felterstrete were mentioned in a document of 1545. Lists details shown on 1610 Speed map, 1746 Noble and Butlin map, 1807 Roper and Cole map, 1847 Wood and law map and 1885 OS map.

{4} Cox states that Crackbelle Lane was a continuation of Fetter Lane to the east of St John's Hospital. The jury at the inquisition of 1275 report an encroachment on their lane by the master. Fetter Lane is found as early as the 13th century and formed a communication between Knight Street and St John's Lane.
