Summary

During 19th-century excavations, a late Saxon well was excavated. A possible coin of Edward the Confessor was found.

Full Description

{1} Deep well underlying castle earthwork & on its south side; possible early Saxon coin recovered from inside;

{2} Coin believed to be of Edward The Confessor ie C11th;

{3} Saxon coin found in well sealed beneath castle embankment; well shown in section; also recovered from its fill were two fragments of iron spearheads & leather waste;

{4}During C19th excavations pits & wells of late Saxon date excavated both within inner bailey & beneath bailey bank;
